SURFACE MODIFICATION SYSTEMS INC
has developed an erosion resistant hard
facing for boiler tubes. As opposed to
as-applied thermal sprayed coatings,
SMS 1088SW applied to shields
is metallurgically bonded and pore free.
The hardfacing is applied to .020-.030”
thick. Hardnesses are Rockwell C 59-65 with hard
particles in the matrix having hardness to over
75-80RC (converted from micro hardness)
The hardfacing can be applied on both carbon and
300 series steel. The coating are much smoother
then thermal sprayed or welded layers.Success
of these coatings over an eight year period in
heavy fly ash has led to its use as the only coating
specified for new boiler units for a major utility.
Currently over 40,000 shields of various configurations
have been installed.
