Diffusion coating process are created by impregnation of elements such as boron, silicon, aluminum, chromium and vanadium into a metal or surface under high temperature to form an alloyed surface.

Advantages of this technique are that complex shapes and small diameters can be coated. Because the layer is metallurgically bonded, the coating will not chip or delaminate in service.
