Vanadium
Carbide on H13 Steel (Magnification 500x)
SMS
5000VC
is an extremely hard diffusion coating
formed by impregnating high carbon steels
with vanadium. The result is a thin vanadium
carbide layer on the surface. Vanadium
carbide is an exceptional material for
abrasion and galling resistance. Since
the coating is applied via a vapor process,
small diameters and complex geometries
can be uniformly coated. In addition due
to the nature of the process coatings
are metallurgically bonded and will not
flake off. Although the coating is hard
some impact resistance is also available.
Typical applications are molds, dies,
punches and knives.
